Software Development

To help answer questions about the software projects we've built and the industries we've worked in, we developed this software project summary page. The project descriptions are pretty high-level. In some cases we've provided a more detailed project summary page that you can view by clicking on the project title.

If you have questions about any of these projects, please contact us and we will be happy to answer them.

  • Online Conference Management Software. Written in ASP .NET, the back-end software for the Self Publishers Online Conference. Includes virtual exhibit hall, virtual badge swipe, teleseminar audio integration, visitor sign-up, and payment processing.
  • IdeaWeaver Writing and Creativity Software. Windows desktop software written in C# using the .NET Framework.
  • LEI Project Organizer: This LEI product lets developers manage projects and track time using a browser-based interface. The software supports four levels of organization: Project, Task, Activity, and To Do. It supports billable and non-billable time, charge rounding, estimating features, and confidence factors for adjusting estimates.
  • Logical Web Publisher: This content management system lets editors and authors enter articles and other publication content into a browser-based administration interface. Web visitors can view, navigate, and search the publication using features on the publication Web site. The Logical Web Publisher is behind many Logical Expressions sites including The Book Consultant, Computor Companion, Pet Tails, Logical Tips, Technohomesteading, and Many Veggie Recipes
  • Advertisement Rotator and Tracking Tool: This tool rotates and tracks advertisements displayed on a portal Web site. The site administrator uses a browser-based administration tool to enter information about advertisements, report view hits and select hits, and purge obsolete data. The software tracks view and select hits on the public site and displays advertisements using a random, non-repeating, sequencing algorithm.
  • Automated Client Software Update: This software allows Windows client applications to download program updates through a secured Internet connection to a Web server. The software consists of a client component that requests updates from the server, a server component that authenticates requests and transfers update files, and a server administration interface that administrators use to enter information about versions and related update files.
  • City Job Opportunities and Council Minutes: This software gives city employees the ability to update the city web site with the most recent council minutes and job opportunities, without knowledge of HTML or Web authoring tools. City employees use a browser-based administration interface to enter council minutes and current job opportunities. Visitors to the city Web site use a browser-based interface to view and search for council minutes and job opportunities.
  • Civil War Collectibles: This software collected information about the sale of civil war collectibles and let authorized site visitors estimate the value of comparable items. The administration interface accepted information about the condition and sale of each collectible. The public interface accepted selection criteria and listed comparable items with an average estimated value.
  • Customer Service Interface for Electrical Co-op: This software provides a Web-based customer interface for an electrical co-op's account management and billing system. Co-op personnel extract data from the third-party software and transfer it to the Web server on a monthly basis. The Web server imports the data into the Web site's database. Customers log in to the customer service interface on the co-op Web site, where they can review their account history and use a credit card to pay their bill on-line.
  • Database Authentication Registry: This software stores user name and password information for database access into the registry in an encrypted format. The information is later retrieved by client applications when connecting to the database.
  • Domain Redirector: This software redirects domain name requests to a specific URL. Administrators use a browser-based interface to provide redirection instructions and instruct DNS to send all requests for the redirected domain to the software's host site. Domain requests received at the host site are redirected according to administrator instructions.
  • Emergency OLE Object Extraction: This software automated the removal of image files from an Access database application. The Access database became unstable when it approached the 2GB limit, mostly due to the inclusion of scanned image files. The software consisted of a suite of tools and application enhancements that removed the images from the database, placed them on the server as separate files, and updated the database to use the external files instead of embedded objects.
  • Fund Raising Campaign Tracker: This software collects information about the current status of fund raising centers and displays that information on a public Web site. Administrators enter the location, goal amount, number of participants, and current funding status for each fund raising center. When visitors view the fund raising status page, the software displays the current status and calculates goal percentages.
  • Internet File Upload Component: Many LEI Internet projects have needed to upload files from the visitor's computer to the Web server through a browser (this kind of tool is called a posting acceptor). Disappointed with the limitations of Microsoft's posting acceptor, LEI researched the HTTP Post specification (RFC 1867) and developed a posting acceptor object that has been used repeatedly in LEI projects. This component works reliably with Internet Exporer (Windows and Mac) and Netscape Navigator browser versions that support multi-part form submissions (generation 4 and above).
  • Internet File Secure Download Component: In order to protect files from unauthorized download, they must not be located in a folder that is mapped into the Web site. LEI researched and developed a program interface that authenticates visitors and transmits files from a secure folder directly down to the client browser. The component buffers file transmissions in chunks to minimize the impact of downloads on server memory.
  • LEI Security Center: This tool allows site administrators to secure individual pages on any number of Web sites. Administrators can delegate sites to security managers who have permission to modify only the settings of their assigned sites. Security is managed by user role and controls access to site objects (e.g. Web pages) and actions (e.g. specific functions on a Web page).
  • Mulch Calculator: This software is a simple Java script that was created for a landscaping company's site to help visitors calculate how much mulch they should purchase to cover a certain area to a certain depth.
  • News and Events: This software lets portal site administrators manage daily news feeds from a variety of participating news sources. Staff members and local news agencies use a browser-based administration interface to enter articles and photos. Portal site visitors see links to the most recent news stories and can view full stories, search for stories, and follow links to related stories. Events are a special class of article displayed in a separate event calendar.
  • On-Line Title Policies: This software allows a title company to publish information about title policy orders on the Web where authorized visitors who are involved with the policy transaction can view it. Title officers use a Windows client application to enter information about title policy orders and related public documents. Authorized users, such as real estate agents and lenders, can review policy information and public documents on the Web using a browser.
  • Property Search: This software imports and displays county records regarding property ownership and legal characteristics. The import process reads data provided by the county from DIF files into a database. The public Web interface lets authorized visitors search and display information about properties. The Web site also supports label printing for selected properties.
  • Realty Search: This software lets a portal site display property listings from participating real estate companies. Real estate agents enter property information and upload photos using a secured, browser-based interface. Agency Web sites use the software to display their listings from the database. The software supports extensive search features. Additionally, the portal site displays all listings from all agencies.
  • Shipment Notification: This software adds e-mail/FAX notification and shipment tracking features to an existing Access order management system. This software required integration with third-party shipping software to get shipment tracking numbers, and third-party e-mail and FAX software to automate notifications.
  • Test Procedure Document Automation: This software helps lead engineers generate protected test procedure form documents in Word. The software consists of a Word template that is populated with a variety of macros. These macros automate commonly required features that must be included in test procedure documents.
  • Web Store Framework: This software is essentially a Web-based product catalog and shopping cart interface. Merchants use an administration Web site to enter their product catalog, assign shipping rates, and process orders. Visitors view products, search for products, order, and pay using features of the store Web site.
  • Yellow Pages: This software lets a portal site offer a "yellow pages" reference for local businesses. The site administrator enters information about businesses into a database through a browser-based administration site. Portal site visitors can view and search for information on local businesses stored in the database.
